Why the Rockwood

I spent a lot of time looking at floor plans before landing on the 2606WS. The layout made sense for solo living — real bedroom separation, a functional kitchen, enough storage to actually live out of it rather than just camp. It’s not a luxury unit, but it’s built to be used, and that matters more to me than impressive on paper.

Six months on full hookups before any serious off-grid use gave me a chance to figure out what the trailer actually is before I started asking it to do harder things. That part was the right call.

Why the Ram 3500

Overkill? Maybe. But when you’re towing 29.9 feet through mountain passes and parking in places where you’d really rather not have a problem, overkill starts sounding like planning. The 3500 doesn’t break a sweat with this load. That’s the whole reason it’s there.

What surprised me

The learning curve wasn’t the towing — it was everything else. Managing a fresh tank, a grey tank, a black tank, propane, battery state, and a solar controller that doesn’t give you quite as much data as you’d like… that’s where the real education happened. The truck and trailer work. The systems around them are where you earn it.

What I’d change

Honestly, not much on the hardware side. The solar setup was the thing I went back and added to — the 200W roof panel does the job in good sun, but I wanted more flexibility, which is why the Jackery 2000 and the foldable panels are part of the kit now. That redundancy matters when you’re planning to work full-time off-grid through a winter.

If I were spec’ing a rig from scratch knowing what I know now, I’d think harder about the solar controller from day one. The current one limits how precisely I can track consumption, and I’d want better data.

The bottom line
